You do have someone in your corner
fighting for
your right to quality health insurance
options. Each
state has its own
rules and regulations that insurance companies must abide by, such
as requiring them to offer coverage when they normally wouldn’t,
or lowering the cost of such policies to qualifying
individuals.
If your state does not offer enough protection, and you
find that you aren’t yet eligible for Medicare or Medicaid, then you
can check into High-Risk Pool coverage, which can sometimes be
costly, but is still a viable option for many.
High-Risk Pools are state run programs, so the guidelines
can vary all around the country. Some programs, for instance,
require that another insurance company must have denied you coverage
before you’ll be eligible for their program. Many times, the
state will implement a conditional period before you can be covered
for pre-existing conditions.
You can help move things along by lobbying your
Congressional representative to apply pressure to his or her
colleagues in support of Medicaid reform so that coverage is
expanded to this group of individuals.
