Divorced
and widowed women in the 55-64
age category are at an increasing
risk of
being left without options
when it comes to health insurance. Many women in this
age group are at risk due to their income status,
and minority women suffer an uneven proportion of the
burden.
Not only are these women facing obstacles with their
income, but they are the most likely group to not be granted access
to health insurance coverage at all. This, at a time when
health insurance coverage is most needed by any citizen – in the
twilight of their lives.
For those who haven’t yet reached age 65, the only way they
can qualify for Medicare is if they are severely disabled. The
same goes for Medicaid, except there also has to be some sort of
poverty issue in order to qualify for this program.
While young adults age19-34 are the most likely to be left
without health coverage, it is the older Americans who are most
likely to need coverage due to deteriorating health issues.
Because they’re more likely to need and ultimately use the
policy, insurance companies charge older adults age 55-64 more for
their coverage than they do to younger citizens.
